Things to Know

No matter where you travel, there are laws that exist to help us function as a society and to keep us safe. However, different places are going to have varying laws and it is important to always know the local laws of the places you visit. Nothing will put a frown on your face quicker than getting a ticket, so read the local laws for South Walton and Destin below and abide by them to make your vacation experience even better.

No Glass on the Beach

Beverages are allowed on the beach, but glass is not. Pack a cooler full of your favorites, but please do not bring glass containers. Littering is also against the law.

If you are drinking alcoholic beverages, be at least 21 years old. Every year, countless underage drinkers are fined and arrested for having alcohol on the beach. Don’t be that person.

Bonfires and the Beach

Along scenic 30A, bonfires are allowed with a permit. Because of the permitting process, most tourists hire a company that will provide the setup, stay the duration of the fire, and clean up afterwards.

In Destin, fires are not allowed between the water’s edge and the high water mark or vegetation line. It will be much easier to contact a local company and have them set this up for you.

Sea Turtles are Protected Creatures

Endangered sea turtles use the white sands of South Walton for laying their eggs. State and federal penalties include fines and/or prison time if you hurt, kill, or disrupt sea turtles in any way. If you see eggs, avoid them. If you are on the beach at night, try not to use your light because this confuses them.

Leave the Sand and Do Not Touch the Dunes

It is against the law to remove sand from the beach. It is also against the law to walk, play on, or disturb the sand dunes or sea oats. These dunes can take hundreds of years to naturally build up and are fragile. They are an important natural defense against storms and beach wildlife run to them for shelter when storms arrive.

Tent Rules

Pop-up canopies are not allowed on the beach within Destin’s city limits. They are allowed along scenic 30A if they are 10’x10’ or smaller and are on the upper 1/3 of the beach, away from the water. To help with beach setup, there are signs stating this law posted along the beaches.

All tents, chairs, and beach gear must be removed at the end of each day. Leaving these things on the beach can disrupt the sea turtles. This is why we have the motto, “Leave no trace”.

No Camping

Camping or sleeping overnight on the beach is against the law on both 30A and Destin beaches.

No Fireworks

Fireworks are not allowed on the beach. Local areas such as The Village of Baytowne Wharf have fireworks displays throughout the season as part of their family entertainment.

Pay Attention to the Beach Flags

Swimming when it is not safe could lead to injury or death. Learn the flag system and be smart. Be safe.

  • Green = calm
  • Yellow = moderate surf and/or currents
  • Red = high surf and/or strong currents
  • Double Red = dangerous conditions and the water is closed
  • Purple = dangerous marine life has been spotted

No Dogs on the Beach

Dogs are not allowed on beaches in Okaloosa county. Only locals with a permit are allowed to bring dogs on the beaches of 30A and only during certain times of the day.
